How to get there

Instructions for getting to the Melodeons in Wensleydale event to be held at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes.

By car, motorhome or caravan from the East:

Leave the A1(M) at Junction 51 signposted to A6055 (A684) Northallerton and Bedale. At the roundabout take the A684 signposted to Leyburn. Follow the A684 through Leyburn and Aysgarth to Hawes. After entering Hawes, the Dales Countryside Museum is the first turning on the right after about ¼ mile. There are large For Sale signs at the corner by the junction of the A684 and the access road down to the DCM and Car Park (OPPOSITE the children’s playground and IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the triangular traffic island). It is signposted with a brown sign. There is a car park at the museum. If you go into the museum and show evidence of registration on the course, the staff on the information desk will give you a car parking permit and a welcome pack.

By car from the South-West:

Leave the M6 just north of Lancaster at Junction 34 signposted to A683 Kirkby Lonsdale, Heysham and Morecambe. Turn right onto the A683 and follow it through Caton, Hornby and Melling. Turn right onto the A687 (A65) signposted to Settle and Skipton (it is a sharp turn just over a river bridge). Follow the A687 through Burton in Lonsdale to a ‘T’ junction with the A65. Turn right and enter Ingleton, then turn left onto the B6255 signposted to Hawes. Turn right at the ‘T’ junction in Hawes (signposted A684 Aysgarth and Leyburn) and travel through the Market Square and the one-way system until you see a brown sign on the left marked Dales Countryside Museum. The turn is immediately after the left turn signposted to Hardraw and Muker. There is a car park at the museum. If you go into the museum and show proof of registration on the course, the staff on the information desk will give you a car parking permit and a welcome pack.

If travelling from Manchester or east Lancashire you may prefer to take the M65 to Nelson, the A682 via Gisburn to Hellifield, the A65 to Settle, the B6479 through Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Ribblehead and then the B6255 into Hawes.

By car from the North-West:

Leave the M6 at Junction 37 signposted A684 Kendal and Sedbergh. Turn left at the end of the slip road following the signposts to Sedbergh. Continue on the A684 through Sedbergh. At the far edge of Sedbergh, the road ahead becomes the A683. Do not follow this, but take a right turn onto the A684 signposted to Garsdale and Hawes. Follow this road into Hawes. Travel through the Market Square and the one-way system until you see a brown sign on the left marked Dales Countryside Museum. The turn is immediately after the left turn signposted to Hardraw and Muker. There is a car park at the museum. If you go into the museum and show proof of registration on the course, the staff on the information desk will give you a car parking permit and a welcome pack.

By motorhome or caravan from the South-West or North-West:

Leave the M6 at Junction 36 signposted to Kirkby Lonsdale A65. Take the exit from the roundabout signposted A65 K’by Lonsdale and Skipton (the 3rd exit approaching from the south, the 1st exit approaching from the north). Follow the A65 to Ingleton then turn left onto the B6255 signposted to Hawes. If you go into the museum and show proof of registration on the course, the staff on the information desk will give you a car parking permit.

By public transport:

Take the train to Garsdale, which is 6 miles from Hawes. Most trains are met by ‘The Little White Bus’, which will take you directly to the Dales Countryside Museum or wherever in Hawes you are staying.
Some trains are not met automatically by ‘The Little White Bus’, you can find the timetable HERE.  The bus office number is 01969 667400.

Depending where you live, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to get a train home on Sunday evening from Garsdale. Alternatively, you could take a train to Northallerton on the East Coast Main Line (35 miles from Hawes) and then catch a bus along the A684 from Northallerton to Hawes. At the time of writing (October 2019), there is a return bus early on Sunday evening. Check HERE.

Alternatively, if you let us know the train on which you are arriving, we can ask whether a course member coming through Northallerton by car would be willing to pick you up from the station.
